I did a devotional before a meeting today. First time in my life I have done something like that. I had an idea buzzing around my head for weeks and it was a perfect time to get it out. So here is what I said...starting with the Bible:

Luke 18:35-43

[35] As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. [36] When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. [37] They told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by."

[38] He called out, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!"

[39] Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!"

[40] Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, [41] "What do you want me to do for you?"

"Lord, I want to see," he replied.

The wisdom of this world is foolishness with God

I read the book the furious longing of God recently and it impacted me greatly. The author, Brendan Manning, harped on the fact that we are children. We say that we are children of God frequently and don't really think about what that means. We think that we are so wise, that we are smart, but we are more like a toddler, who gravely tells his father that honey comes from milking bees, that is how our wisdom sounds to God.

We are foolish, and God our Father adores us. We have such sinful pride and we are commanded to call God, Abba, Father. Brendan points out that this is akin to how children these days call their father's "Daddy". That is the intimate, close relationship we have with God.

The story of the blind man is fantastic for so many reasons. The one I'm going to focus on is the way it shows us how to pray. First of all, he is persistent. Elsewhere in the Gospels Jesus talks about praying repeatedly and persistently for something. The blind man is told to be quiet by those who were friends of Jesus, but he called out even more loudly.

Secondly, and most importantly, we don't have to trick God into answering our prayers. We don't have to explain how doing what we want will be good for God. What is the prayer here? Simple, "Lord, I want to see."

Too often we fall into the trap of thinking that if we use bigger and more words when we pray, God will hear us more. We think that our "wise" "churchy" words will sway God somehow, but we forget, we are toddlers to God. We are His beloved children. We can pray, persistently and simply, and know that God will answer our prayer in the way that will sanctify us the most. We don't have to think through all the ramifications of what we are praying for. We can rest in the sure knowledge that God knows, far better than we do, what is good for us, and He will always, without fail, do what is best for us.

It is important to remember that God loves us because He chose to love us. He does not love us because of something we did, and He does not love us in spite of anything we will do.

To get personal here: There were times that I wondered if I should stop praying for healing for Carrie. Maybe God has answered and said no. Maybe I should stop praying for children, for a "normal" life. Maybe I should just accept what is, and try to make the best out of it.

Now I pray for what I want. I pray for small things, I pray for large things. I pray for things that maybe I shouldn't "bother" God with, I pray for things some people would get mad at me for praying for. I pray with the knowledge that I am foolish and that God knows this, and adores me. I pray knowing that if there is anything that I am asking for that I shouldn't be asking for, God is big enough to sort it out.

I have been reenergized by this book and by the wondrous reminder that our God, who loves His foolish children with a furious love, personally asks each of us, "What do you want me to do for you?"

the furious longing of God

Brennan Manning, the author, was working in a leper colony outside of New Orleans when he met Yolanda. A beautiful woman who has had her beauty taken away by leprosy. Her ex-husband had forbidden her children to visit her. Brennan Manning is told that she is dying and visits her one last time.

Below is an excerpt from the book the furious longing of God:

I anointed Yolanda and prayed with her. As I turned around to put the top back on the bottle of oil, the room was filled with a brilliant light. It had been raining when I came in; I didn't even look up, but said, "Thanks, Abba, for the sunshine. I bet that'll cheer her up."

As I turned back to look at Yolanda - and if I live to be three hundred years old I'll never be able to find the words to describe what I saw - her face was like a sunburst over the mountains, like one thousand sunbeams streaming out of her face literally so brilliant I had to shield my eyes.

I said, "Yolanda, you appear to be very happy."

With her slight Mexican-American accent she said, "Oh Father, I am so happy."

I then asked her, "Will you tell me why you're so happy?"

She said, "Yes, the Abba of Jesus just told me He would take me home today."

I vividly remember the hot tears that began rolling down my cheeks. After a lengthy pause, I asked just what the Abba of Jesus said.

Yolanda said:

Come now My love. My lovely one, come.

For you, the winter has passed, the snows are over and gone,

the flowers appear in the land,

the season of joyful songs has come.

The cooing of the turtledove

is heard in our land.

Come now, My love. My Yolanda, come.

Let Me see your face. And let Me hear your voice,

for your voice is sweet and your face is beautiful.

Come now, My love, My lovely one, come.

Six hours later her little leprous body was swept up into the furious love of her Abba. Later that same day, I learned from the staff that Yolanda was illiterate. She had never read the Bible, or any book for that matter, in her entire life. I surely had never repeated those words to her in any of my visits. I was, as they say, a man undone.

Friendship is weird.

Way back in 1993 when some pimply faced new kid in school with slicked back hair and a chubby, shy kid with a terrible hair cut first met, no one had any idea that they would still be friends over seventeen years later.

In fact, no one had any thought that they would be such good, close friends that people would think of them like a married couple.

We lived at each other’s houses and knew each other’s parents so well that we got the birds and bees talk from two sources.

People would come up to me and say, “Hey man, Sparrow owes me five bucks. We both know he is never going to pay me back, but he will pay YOU back, so why don’t you give me the money and you can get it from him.”

For a friendship to last this long you have to be willing to talk about issues, since when you are as close as we were and spent as much time together as we did, you are bound to get into arguments. Dumb ones mostly. Like how it was impossible that I couldn’t like a song that Jeff loved so much. We argued about that for almost two hours I think. Worst part was that it was a Goo Goo Dolls song.

There was one time we got in a fight about something moronic and didn’t see each other for two weeks. Kevin had to drive out to North East to pick Jeff up so we could “hug it out”. By the time the two weeks had passed we had no recollection about what the argument was anyway. Might have been Matchbox 20.

We are on such opposite sides of so many issues, religion, politics, alcohol (he doesn’t like beer), and other vital issues. However we manage to put that all aside, even the fact that he know that I really want him to think like I do on religion. I am amazed by how many friendships are destroyed by politics or religion….or alcohol. In regards to politics, we are all being screwed by our politicians so why fight about it? And religion? What good does it do me or him if I chase away a friend by harping on it? He knows my thoughts and feelings on the matter, one day he will realize I’m right. :)

So in closing, Jeff, I love you, although not in a move to Massachusetts kind of way, I can’t think of anyone else I would rather be practically strip-searched and kicked out of Canada with.

A Note From My Mom

I've been going through a lot of stuff in the house, getting rid of old stuff that I don't use and sorting things in preparation for moving next year and I found a notebook from my 24th birthday. My Mom had the idea that it would be neat for people to write something nice in a notebook and I could read the nice notes later.

My 24th birthday would be the last birthday I would celebrate with my Mom as she would leave us six months later.

I found the book recently, sitting on a bookshelf of course, and thought that I would share the note my Mom wrote to me.

To My Dear Son, Jonathan,

As I look back over the years, the one gift you have given me, which stands out, is laughter. From your baby smile, which you did with your whole body, to your obsession with the Dukes of Hazzard (“I’ll be Luke and you be Daisy.”) you’ve given me smiles and laughter. Remember at the dinner table when you practiced being windshield wipers? And Mr. Spoon? And the stories you would act out with whatever was handy?

Even ushering me down the aisle at Elizabeth’s wedding, you got your emotional Mom to smile and laugh.

And so in this coming year I would wish for you many smiles and much laughter.

Recession Follow Up

My brother recently sent me this link to a tent city outside of Sacramento. These are homeless people, people who need help. And what do you do? What can you do?

I think this is where people feeling the pinch (the one that makes them not give money to others since they are strapped for cash but can still find 1.2 million dollars for camcorders) really hurts. I know people will be looking for the government to save these people when a good charity or two that had 1.2 million dollars in donations coming in could do so much more to help these people, and help them more effectively too.

Have we become so used to looking to the government for help that we can't even help each other? Are we so tired of our money being extorted by the government to be used as they see fit that we don't want to spend another dime on anyone else?

Why doesn't the church do more to help? Aren't hard times the best time to show love to people who need it? Of course it is harder in hard times to find that extra bit to give, and how do we balance helping those outside the church with helping those in the church?

Many times I feel like I have more questions than answers. I think what it comes down to is that we need to focus on smaller parts of the big picture so you don't feel overwhelmed. If we each faithfully do our small part to help then the bigger needs will get taken care of.

How America Does Recessions

So I've been hearing about how bad it is. That the economy is as bad as it has ever been since the Great Depression. Now I know there are people out there hurting since they are out of work. I have been there and I feel their pain.

However I think many people feel the pinch just because they have been told there is a pinch. Some people feel strapped when it comes to many things, but not so strapped that they can't buy a piece of garbage digital camcorder from QVC.

Carrie likes to watch QVC, it gives her the joy of shopping without going places and hurting her back or spending money. I was reading a book while she was watching and QVC was selling digital camcorders that you couldn't even use to take still pictures. They honestly looked like junk and they sold for $120.00 each.

Over the course of 15 minutes QVC sold 10,000 of these, they completely sold out. Simple math here:

10,000 junk camcorders times $120.00 each (disregarding shipping and taxes) = 1.2 million dollars spent on garbage in 15 minutes.

Weather Watching

In a 24 hour period of time we went from -18 degrees to 31 degrees. It doesn't really register I think until you realize that it was a 49 degree swing and if we had another 49 degree swing the temperature would go from 31 degrees to 80 degrees.

So think about the difference between 80 degrees and 31 degrees and then subtract that from 31 degrees to see how stupidly cold it was here. And this was before wind chill.

People were walking around with no coats, just sweatshirts since it felt so balmy....at least for a little while.

Christmas - The Wonder of It All

Christmas summed up in a verse:

John 3:16.

16"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."

We all have read, recited, heard this verse so many times in our lives that sometimes it becomes almost too well known and we don't really hear what it is saying. Think about what exactly it meant to deliver your own child up for pain, sadness, rejection, and death. Think about why it was done, not so the Creator would be better off, but that the created would not be destroyed.

Sometimes I look at my life and wonder how a perfect God would ever have anything to do with me, yet this verse reminds me that He desired that I should have eternal life and avoid destruction so much that He offered His perfect Son as a sacrifice for me.

How can we doubt God's love when we have this picture, this verse, that so perfectly portrays His wondrous love? How can we give in to Satan's lies that we aren't "good enough" or haven't "suffered enough" to earn salvation?

The Bible clearly states that "while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Once more, read it slowly:

I'm sure you've heard the saying, "If Jesus only needed to come and die for you, He still would have done it."

I would take that one step further and say that He did die just for me. He didn't suffer for a mass of faceless people, rather He sacrificed Himself for billions of specific people, all of whom He knows intimately.

I think if we could wrap our minds around this concept we would live our lives more fully for Christ. We just can't comprehend someone being so powerful and superior to us actually wanting a close relationship with us. We look at the famous people in our world and see to what great lengths they go through to keep the "common folk" away from them and apply that picture to God, when that is the furthest from the truth.

When I was younger I loved Christmas primarily because of the gifts, but now that I am older I feel saddened that people who focus only on the gifts and family miss out on the most exciting part of this holiday. The birth of our Savior.

This is the time when we stop and spend time specially thanking God for our salvation that came about through the birth of a tiny child. A child that was not just a child, but God Himself who came down to us, who met us in our sad state, and lived amongst us for 33 years before finally sacrificing Himself in order to bring us back to Him.

The first song is "Here is Our King" by The David Crowder Band. This song is Christmas to me, the reason for our celebration, as the angels rejoiced on that day 2000 years ago, we do the same now.

Maybe this isn't a big deal for most of you, but it is for me, I hadn't worn shoes without pain since Monday the 6th.

The reason? I had injured both of my feet in two separate incidents, one involved a storm door dropping on my foot and the other involved taking a chunk out of the side of my foot.

The pressure of wearing shoes hurt too much so I had to wear flip flops....everyday even when it was rather chilly in the morning.

But today, even though I am feeling some discomfort I am able to wear shoes to work.

So...yay me!!

In August, Fatima Al-Mutairi, the 26-year-old daughter of a Muslim cleric, was brutally killed by her brother in Buraydah, Saudi Arabia, after she proclaimed her faith to her family. The Voice of the Martyrs contacts report Fatima’s fellowship with other believers was mainly limited to Internet forums and phone correspondence. "As part of her testimony to the family, she proclaimed that the way of Christ is the most pure and most holy way of all. After sharing with her family, she found her brother in her room with her laptop open before him," VOM contacts said. "Her laptop contained notes about her spiritual journey, which he was searching in order to find more evidence against her. Her brother locked her in the room for four hours, during which time she wrote a final letter on the Internet. Fatima was killed soon thereafter," VOM contacts added.

Prior to her martyrdom Fatima wrote a poem that shows her love for Christ and her desire to share His love with her family.

Thank you for adding your name to the online petition asking the Chinese government to free Pastor Bike. Your voice was heard! Pastor Bike is FREE! On Friday, August 29, prominent Chinese house church leader Zhang Mingxuan, affectionately known as "Pastor Bike," his wife and a co-worker were released from Chinese custody. Pastor Bike was arrested along with his wife and co-worker August 6, two days before the Olympic Games began in Beijing. An outspoken evangelist, Pastor Bike has travelled on his bike to many places in China, handing out Christian literature and Bibles and preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Instead of being held at a prison or a detention center Pastor Bike and his wife, Xie Fenglan, and their co-worker were taken to resort hotels on a "forced vacation" designed to ensure that they couldn’t talk to any foreign media. Pastor Bike was scheduled to do an interview with the BBC the day of his arrest.

All three believers are in good health and spirits and praising God for their release, according to our co-laborers at China Aid Association. The detainees said during their confinement they had opportunities to witness to guards and even high-ranking government officials staying at the hotels where they were held.

On August 26, The Voice of the Martyrs and China Aid Association launched an international online petition drive advocating for Pastor Bike, his wife and co-worker to be released. On September 4, China Aid Association delivered the petition — which had more than 57,000 names printed on 619 pages — addressed to Ambassador Zhou Wenzhong at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Washington, D.C. Included was a letter thanking the Chinese government for releasing these house-church Christians.

We are thankful to you and the thousands of others who logged on and signed the petition. Christians in free nations often wonder if we can really make a practical difference for Christians in persecuted countries. Pastor Bike’s release shows that WE CAN!

I'm not someone who believes that these things do any good, but it seems that in this case taking the 2 minutes to sign the petition is a good use of time on the off chance that it could work. God has used lesser tools than internet petitions in the past I'm sure.

So I just found out that the story behind the song "Healer" is not true. The writer Mike G. is not suffering from cancer and he is not terminal.

The first reaction is one of sorrow and anger, sorrow that he lied and anger that he made us look like fools to the world.

However, when you see the true intent of the song, it changes things, when you realize that he came forward to confess, he wasn't caught in a lie and forced to confess, he knew that he needed to be clean and needed to break free. He lied to his wife and his parents about this, that is how bad off he was.

I think we all should be praying for him to be able to trust in God's power to break him free from
the sin of lust. The first step I'm sure was the hardest and I think in some ways he is an example of courage, losing everything for the truth.

The words of his father I think explain the situation best. The addictive behavior that is talked about is an addiction to pornography that he had hidden from the time he was 12.

THE father of fallen pastor Michael Guglielmucci, Danny, read this brief statement to a packed congregation to explain his son's actions.

"Today is a very sad day for our family and church family.

For many years our son, Michael has suffered from unexplained illnesses. We have been worried as we have seen him suffer and spend periods of time in hospital.

Two years ago our lives were totally turned around by the sad news of our sons' cancer diagnosis. The love and support shown by our local church and all of our many friends around the world helped us get through a very difficult situation.

During the last two years we have experienced the favor of God, his love and grace, and also the constant pain of the possibility of losing a son.

On Tuesday 12th of August we received a call to come and meet with Mike and Amanda but weren't ready for what we were about to hear. Mike began to share how he has lived a lie for the last 16 years of his life because of addictive behavior he couldn't break free from.

He loved God and would throw himself into prayer, worship, and serving God with full energy and enthusiasm but still couldn't break free.

In September in 2006, Mike had an accident and went to hospital. It was at this time, because of his torment of living a double life, Mike thought he could escape the pain by creating a diversion from his addiction to adult pornography, so he created the cancer scenario.

The pain of this addiction was so deep that he started something he couldn't stop and proceeded on a downward spiral that led to him experiencing pain and suffering that resulted in constant vomiting and many other symptoms of a genuine sufferer.

Sharonne and I witnessed these episodes and pained and wept over his suffering. Michael wrote the song Healer because he wanted God to set him free from his addiction but hid it behind the lie of a fabricated illness.

Once he had started down this track he felt he couldn't stop so he continued to act out this sickness, feeling he had gone too deep into the lie.

I can't begin to tell you how much this is hurting us on the inside. A few weeks ago Mike had a dream of Jesus on the cross looking down on him saying, 'the truth will set you free' and so he decided to confess and bring everything out into the open.

I immediately contacted our National Executive and submitted to their advice and council. Church, our family needs your prayers at this time. We are so, so sorry to bring you into this.

I have lead you with openness and integrity and declare that we have not lived a lie before you. We fully understand the questions, shock, disbelief and even anger you may feel over this announcement. Please pray for us and we will pray for you.

Michael is struggling with a different kind of illness and is receiving professional help and will do so as long as is needed. On the council and advice of our executive and board, after our up and coming Edge conference, we will take time to be with Mike and get him all the professional and spiritual help he needs to come to full recovery.

I just finished Dreamcatcher last night, I actually read a book rather than watch TV while riding the bike, don't worry, I will get back to filling my brain with nonsense soon. Anyway, the book was quite good, a stunning beginning and an ending that was quite agreeable.

There were times when I was reading that I would skip ahead to the bottom of the page without meaning to, I was just reading so fast that my brain couldn't keep up, I just wanted to know what happens next so badly.

I also read Cell while on vacation. Very good, end of the world stuff, half the size of Dreamcatcher, so not as involved. Cell has a quite interesting ending, part of it reminded me of The Stand in a way.

Well worth the time to check both books out.

A Few Things

Start at the beginning when he is diagnosed with cancer, not too many posts in the blog so far, easy to read.

Secondly:

I was thinking about the past few months this morning. As you all know February was VERY hard for us for a variety of reasons. But one of the biggest issues was the deterioration of Carrie's back. the whole situation seemed rather hopeless and Carrie wasn't getting medicine, and that made things seem even more bleak.

Someone at church had the idea of having the Pastor's and Elder's come over and anoint Carrie with oil, lay hands on her and pray for us both.

Since that time the medicine situation has done a complete 180, the doctor trusts us to be very careful in using the medicine and will allow us to pick up some medication a few days earlier than normal for reasons like a vacation.

Since that time we have found Dr. Sumer who has started Carrie on a long term plan towards healing. He is administering shots in her back to ease the muscles and allow her body to heal itself. Once we are back from vacation she will start Physical Therapy with his Therapist which he believes will help her even more.

What is interesting is that we almost didn't go see Dr. Sumer. I had called for an appointment since someone in my life group said he was a very good doctor. They couldn't get us in for over two months. After things had turned around with the medication by late March and we were trying to see a surgeon I was considering canceling the appointment due to me being so tired of seeing unhelpful doctor after unhelpful doctor.

Carrie said we shouldn't, that she felt that God wanted us to see this doctor. I wasn't believing really, but I was trying to keep her spirits up so I said ok. The day before the appointment Carrie was nervous and tried to persuade me to cancel the appointment since she didn't want to go.

I reminded her of what she had said a month before and made her go, and on that day he did the first set of shots in her back and she has started feeling relief.

Almost as a stamp of certification we discovered that Dr. Sumer had recently converted to Christianity.

We don't know if Carrie's back will ever be "normal" or if she will ever be able to get off of all her medications, but we do see improvement, drastic improvement.

After Pastor Dave had prayed for Carrie he looked at her and I could tell that he wouldn't have been surprised if she had lept off the couch pain free, so deep is his faith. And while there was not some huge miracle performed on the spot you can retrace the steps leading back to prayer and anointing.

Pretty amazing.

Remembrances

July 19^th will mark the 5^th year anniversary of my mother dying.

In Christian circles we call it “going home” or other such terms, and they are true, but it doesn’t change the fact that my mother is no longer here with me. While we don’t mourn with no hope we still do mourn.

Merlin died a few months ago and I run into the same issues when I think about him that I do when I think about my Mom. Some of the clearest memories are the ones of them dying. The memories that stand out are them in the hospital never to leave. Their lifeless bodies lying there with tubes, eyes closed like they are sleeping, and me knowing that they will never be waking up again this side of paradise.

And that is not how I want to remember them.

I force myself to remember happier times when I think of them.

I think of Merlin sitting next to me on the arm of the chair watching sports with me. Merlin running along beside me as I carry some yummy canned cat food into the bedroom so I can close the door so the other cats can’t chase Merlin away from his treat.

Merlin with his meows that sound more like barks, the way his eyes get so wide when he would be playing with a toy. How we had to take some of his teeth out, due to improper blood flow we know now, and sometimes when he was playing with me he would try to bite me. I would be more worried that he was injuring himself by gumming my arm than I would be in pain.

I remember how gentle he was, how he would curl up by my pillow at night and sleep next to me. He had a specific spot he would sleep in, I could put him anywhere on the bed and he would go to that spot and lie down.

And for my mother, I think of corn on the cob fights. And indoor water fights. I think of her spraying us with the sink hose when we thought we had the upper hand. When I think of my mother I think of her reading the Prydain Cycle to my brother and me at night before bedtime, reading the Chronicles of Narnia. Knowing it was past our bedtime but all three of us wanted to see what happens next so we would continue on.

I think of the movie Alien. My brother and I were trying to watch this suspense filled movie in the living room and over in the dining room Mom was sewing using her sewing machine. We would be at a super scary part, leaned forward in the chairs, then suddenly, chug-chug-chug, the sewing machine would start up, causing weird lines to cross the TV screen. Even then it was funny.

Going for walks so we could talk to each other. I have such a clear recollection of the conversation when we started a new school and I didn’t like the people as much as I did at the old school. I remember camping, the three legged bear, campsite 74 that we always got, wasn’t super close to the road like 73 was, but still closer to the bathrooms than 75. Going to the beach for picnics, that is something I really miss now that I live somewhere with no beach nearby.

One memory that I can laugh about now was when Mom wanted some concrete sidewalk slabs for her garden path. Some people were tearing up their yard and they offered them to us if we dug them out and took them. We were using pitchforks to pry the slab up and I caught a pitchfork through the foot….well through the shoe actually. If went straight through so it was only in the sole. That was nice not having to go to the hospital, but my shoe made squishing noises when it rained from then on.

The time Mom got a metal stake stuck in her foot. I remember the circles that the doctor drew on her foot showing how far the infection had spread in her foot. I remember the joy I felt when the circles started to get smaller.

Painting my new house. Carrie’s brother and one of my sisters helped out painting while the rest of us moved all the junk from my one bedroom apartment to my new mansion-like three-bedroom house. The fumes got to them a little and by the end of the day as we ate subs for dinner the humor got a wee bit weird.

I remember when Dad wouldn’t participate in apple bobbing and so she splashed him. He got mad, at the time it wasn’t funny, but now I can’t help but grin since it showed how entirely different those two people are, but also how perfect they are for each other.

When I think of Dad when I was younger and Dad now after Mom had years to soften him up he is such a different person. Different in a good way.

The liquor story memory is one of my favorites. I had just got my license and I wanted to drive everywhere. So I drove Mom to the liquor store to pick up some wine. We were at the cash register and she had a memory lapse and couldn’t remember where the $20.00 bill was that she had brought to pay for the wine. She was digging through her purse looking in pocket after pocket trying to find it. The cashier had that look in his eyes like he wasn’t sure if he should be selling alcohol to some lady who was acting like she had one or two too many already.

When I sit and force myself to think of the happy times there are so many, too many to remember them all.

But mostly I think about corn on the cob fights.

Cautiously Optimistic

We are seeing a new doctor to try and get Carrie's back fixed and this guy is fantastic. You get the sense that he really does care and want to help Carrie be able to stop hurting and live a normal life.

He has done 4 shots in her back that are supposed to relax the muscles so the blood can flow to them again and the body can heal itself. If the muscles can get loosened up then maybe the disk won't have so much pressure on it and it can begin to heal.

This has gone on so long now that I am trying to keep from being hopeful, just so I don't get my hopes dashed once again, but at the least we have a plan of attack which is just an amazing thing to finally have.

Keep praying for us that this works.

Pancakes and Syrup....the silent killers

As some of you know I have been having some heart issues/worries. My heart will pound or race for what seemed like no reason at all. Recently I discovered a webpage talking about this issue. The most salient point to me was that if you eat a big meal on an empty stomach when your blood sugar is low it is like a shot of adrenaline to your heart. Since I don't like the feeling of my heart trying to escape my chest I tried to avoid eating large meals on an empty stomach.

However, it still continued to happen. A few nights ago I made pancakes for dinner and my heart raced all night. It was so bad it was keeping me awake, I barely slept.

So now I am on a new diet, no white. No more refined sugar, no more empty carbs, no more good food basically.

My rice and pasta are now brown, my soup is low sodium, and I drink decaff coffee.

Wheeeeee....

This woman gained comfort in her misery by thinking GREAT THOUGHTS OF CHRIST. Update:

Carrie is still in pain all the time, it isn't as bad as it has been, but she still hasn't been able to leave the house in over a month. We received a call from a surgeon's office who asked us some questions about stuff and we had the MRIs sent over to them so we are waiting for them to call us back. Hopefully he will deign to help us.

Perfect Timing

Trip to the Doctor

Went to the pain specialist today, they weren't able to help us much, which was mostly expected. We will be going to a surgeon at some point in the future, hopefully soon. It appears Carrie might be stuck in the middle, it is too bad that the epidural injections and physical therapy don't seem to help, but not bad enough that a surgeon really wants to get involved.

If the surgeon doesn't want to do anything we will be back to square one, left wondering where God's plan is leading us.

Since I love music so much, I'll add this song to the post.

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who sent us cards and emails regarding Merlin. They were all appreciated greatly.

Here is the Carrie update:

She is still in constant pain, of course, but it isn't as bad as it was on Friday. The doctor relented and prescribed a narcotic pain reliever again and it has really helped Carrie. We were also able to pick up another medicine on Sunday that really helps her as well. So Carrie has been able to sleep again, which is good.

We still need to find a pain doctor or neurosurgeon who will be willing to listen to us and not dismiss us like all the others did so we can find a permanent solution for this problem.

Thank you all for your prayers. Don't stop now.

Though There's Pain in the Offering

The elders came over last night and prayed over us. While nothing miraculously was healed last night we were encouraged. I suppose feeling up and down is part of life.

We could really use something good to happen in this situation soon. I don't understand why God has planned this route for us, but I promised that I would trust Him, even though I need His help to do so. There is so much proof that He loves us and has sacrificed so much for us that I refuse to believe that He has abandoned us.

Nothing Ever Happens

For those who I haven't told yet this past week has been absolutely awful. Carrie's doctor has taken her off most of her pain medicine and we were worried at one point that she was going to no longer prescribe pain medication. Starting last Thursday, life started getting bad and it just kept going downhill from there. As I look back over the past week at the string of horrible events that just keep piling on top of each other I am amazed and astonished and I cling to the story of Job.

Carrie is now in constant agony, neither of us are getting any sleep, and there is nothing I can do to make her better.

I repeat to Carrie and myself that God is good, this is going according to His plan and that His plan is good and that we have to continue to have faith and trust and love Him. Somedays I believe it, other days it is harder. I pray the prayer of the father in the Gospels to "help my unbelief".

The elders are coming over tonight to anoint Carrie and pray over her for healing. I keep struggling with the fact that while I know that God can heal her, I just don't believe that He will, and that is why this song keeps running through my head.

Giving it the Green Light

Firstly, everyone check out this website and watch at least the first video. There is no way you will look at stuff "Made in China" again. I also suspect you might just be a little more thankful for all the good things God has done for you.

Now on to personal things, I took Merlin to the vet on Friday and discovered that he has heart disease, he is only 6 so that was not the most welcome news. I have medicine that I give him everyday to keep him comfortable for however long he has left, but at least he is back home and not stuck in some strange vet's office.

I also am heading to the hospital in about 15 minutes to have a heart monitor put on me to see if I have a rapid heartbeat. Logically, I know that I am mostly ok, but when your heart is doing weird stuff it is hard to think logically. I'll keep you all posted on this situation.

Seeker - Sensitive Dreck

Let me but upfront about this, I despise seeker sensitive churches, using the common usage of this term. These churches, just to paint with a broad stroke, wastes their Sunday mornings preaching sermons to the 4 people who were dragged there by their family members in the hopes that one of them will "Convert" to being another person sitting in the pew who isn't being taught anything since that person is now "saved" and can now be ignored.

The incredibly sad part about all this is that there is a church in my area that proclaims itself seeker-friendly, then this very same church closed its doors on Christmas since being there for the seekers was just too doggone hard that day!

Anyway, just as I saw a study that suggests that people are more irritable when they don't get enough sleep comes this report that not teaching what Christ demands we do is failing to bring people to true salvation.

Yes, I am stunned as well.

Here is a quote from the story:

"Some of the stuff that we have put millions of dollars into thinking it would really help our people grow and develop spiritually, when the data actually came back it wasn’t helping people that much. Other things that we didn’t put that much money into and didn’t put much staff against is stuff our people are crying out for."

This is what happens when foolish man decides that he is wiser than an all-powerful and all-knowing God. This is the idiocy that occurs when we turn our backs on God and instead use poll data to decide how we are to run our churches. Hopefully truth will be learned from this pile of horsepoopie that "seeker-friendly" churches have created.

When it Doesn't Feel Like We are Winning

There is a David Crowder song called "We Win!" It is a very upbeat song reminding us that the outcome is assured, that this great war that we are a part of has already been won, not by our weak means but by the strength of our Savior.

Right now there is a funeral at my church for a 25 year old woman who was murdered in her home last week. She is the daughter of one of the elders of the church. At this moment I'm feeling a bit down, not really down, just sad for the family. I haven't been going to the church long enough to have known her, she moved to Nashville with her husband a few years back, or to really know the elder or his family, yet I feel their pain.

To some extent, all of us who have lost someone very close to us can commiserate, but on the other hand we can't. What can you say to the grieving mother who has to come to grips with the fact that her daughter is dead all because someone decided that his or her life would be better if she were dead.

Or how do you console the father who was unable to protect his child, even though that is what we men do, we protect our families, but at this point he was unable to since she lived several states away.

Or what to say to explain to her siblings who won't be able to grow old with their sister? Or her friends?

Our pastor read from Isaiah 57:15 last week and it was very fitting.

" 15 For this is what the high and lofty One says—
he who lives forever, whose name is holy:
"I live in a high and holy place,
but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit,
to revive the spirit of the lowly
and to revive the heart of the contrite."

Our God who ordains all things has caused this tragedy to come to pass. He promises us that all things work for good for His children, but He also knows that things will be hard.

A thing of great comfort to me is that we do not serve a lofty God who commands from the rear and is distant. Our God isn't the king who has become great on the backs of his slaves, rather He became lowly to make us great. There is not a tragedy or pain that He has not already felt for us. There is not a sorrow or test that He has not overcome. But even our great Savior understands the feeling of sorrow and loss.

He wept over Lazarus and cried out His anguish over the path He was to take to the cross.

Even now as the funeral is going on and there is so much pain He is there for His children, comforting us and promising us that even this will be good and is a vital part of the victory, even though it doesn't feel like it.

So I saw the doctor today for a check-up. He wanted to see how well I was healing from the surgery.

So I got to drop my pants and kneel on the table that rose into the air so the "spreader" could do her job and allow the doctor to see my rectum well. The use of the nearby butt light was put to good use as well.

"Hmm, very nice, looking good," the doctor says while staring at my exposed sphincter.

I felt a burst of pride, I had a good looking sphincter! Very tough to stay humble after a compliment like that one I can assure you!

Assure....maybe not the best word choice there....

So I added a new blog to my list of links. If the author, Germy as I will call him, fails as a blog writer I have no issues with yanking him and putting in a relief blogger, maybe someone like Curt Schilling.

What I Said at My Granddaughter's Funeral

I had the privilege of sitting with my family while Tom Steller and Sam Crabtree ministered to us at the funeral of Felicity Margaret Piper who was stillborn at full term on September 22, 2007. Her father Abraham asked me to speak for five minutes on “A Granddaddy’s Thoughts.” Here is what I said.

I didn’t know Felicity Margaret. My experience of her life was entirely through other people for nine months. And my experience of her death, even though it was physically immediate and touchable, has been emotionally experienced almost entirely through other people.

So at this moment, what it means for me to be Felicity’s grandfather is that I am living this loss almost entirely through other people’s experience of this loss. And because of my love for all these people, there is a powerful sweetness in this pain.

Being Felicity’s grandfather means that I have tasted her loss through my daughters-in-law, her aunts Shelly, Melissa, and Lesley. The measure of her worth and the greatness of her loss have been written on your faces, and they are the more beautiful for it.

Being Felicity’s grandfather means that I have felt her loss in the shattered expectation of her aunt Talitha, my daughter. It was not easy to go to school on Monday. But you and Mommy made a good plan with the school counselor to inform the teachers and students. And now, in a way you never expected, your heart is knit together with Dasia whose little brother Zach was killed by the dog a month ago.

Being Felicity’s grandfather means that I have felt her loss through her uncles and my sons Karsten, Benjamin, and Barnabas. I broke the news to each of you and watched all your plans change. You are good brothers to each other. And I cannot tell you how much I love the tears and embraces of strong men.

Being Felicity’s grandfather means that I have felt her loss through her grandmother, my wife Noël. Strange and wonderful. Your tears came slowly and have increased. Mine came quickly and have decreased. Almost the story of our lives. Thank you for knitting Felicity’s blanket, and weeping as you decided to give it to her anyway.

Being Felicity’s grandfather means that I have felt the loss through her mother, my daughter-in-law Molly. For her entire life she depended on you more than anyone. You fed her, you cleansed her, you supported her, you protected her, you knew her better than anyone. The grace that God has given you to love her greatly and let her go is amazing. Christ is on display in your life.

Being Felicity’s grandfather means that I have felt the loss through her father, my son Abraham. The words from Saturday morning’s phone call are cut into my heart, “Daddy, we lost the baby.” Nothing, Abraham, has gone deeper inside of me than your loss.

Being Felicity’s grandfather means that I have felt the loss through her great grandfather, my father Bill Piper. And this experience is totally different from all the others. In this case, the loss is all gain. My father died six months and sixteen days before Felicity did. I believe the blood and righteousness of Jesus Christ covers the sins of all who trust him and all who are not old enough to trust him here but will trust him later.

Therefore, I believe Felicity and her great grandfather met each other early Sunday morning in the presence of Christ. And my father said, perhaps, “Hello, Felicity. I’m your great grandfather Piper. Come, there is somebody I want you to meet. His name is Jesus. He’s the reason you’re here. You don’t need to be afraid. Your Savior has led you all the way. And Jesus does all things well.”
